Traditional food production generates high greenhouse gas emissions – and not just in meat production. It also requires other valuable resources such as water, energy and agricultural land.

Optimising existing methods, for example through more efficient use of fertilisers, is not enough to meet global challenges such as climate change, resource scarcity, biodiversity loss and general environmental degradation.

Can alternative approaches and technologies revolutionise agriculture? From bioreactors and innovative cultivation methods to the use of local resources, this event provides insights into old and new processes. What opportunities and risks do these technologies present for environmental and climate protection as well as food security in Germany and around the world?

With this event, we want to present different approaches and discuss their acceptance by producers, markets and consumers. We will highlight strategies for securing our food supply in a sustainable manner.

Water is essential for our survival as the basis of all life. As a source for biological cycles and a medium for transport, hygiene and energy production, it is precious and therefore highly worthy of protection. On the other hand, uncontrolled quantities of water are increasingly posing a threat.

The quality and availability of this valuable resource are under threat. Climate change, economic activity and misguided developments in construction and infrastructure are the causes. This vital raw material also has enormous economic significance and harbours considerable potential for political conflict.

With this event, we want to highlight abuses and dangers and discuss options for action. We will discuss strategies for restoring and sustainably protecting water quality and address the issue of water quantity.

The availability of land is naturally limited, and unlike many consumer goods, we cannot simply create new land. This fact presents us with a crucial question: How can we best manage this valuable but limited resource?

As part of the second Straubinger Sustainability Talks, we will take an in-depth look at the various competing uses of land: from intensive agriculture and natural moorlands to organic farming, the cultivation of energy crops, and use for forestry, commercial and residential development, solar energy and wind power.

Are traditional assessments and regulations still in line with our current needs? Are different uses really in competition with each other? Are radical changes necessary? Our expert discussion aims to identify different objectives and interests, discuss land use in terms of sustainability and provide innovative impetus for shaping structural change.

Reducing CO2 emissions is the major task in combating the climate crisis.

With this event, we want to highlight the scientific principles behind how CO2 is produced and how it works.

We want to present the options and efforts available for avoiding, storing and utilising it. We also want to dispel any misconceptions.

We will outline the economic policy instruments and their regional dimension. Finally, we will discuss questions about the extent of regulation through political action.

This colloquium also aims to establish a new format. The Straubing Sustainability Talks will regularly examine individual aspects of the key topic of sustainability in greater depth, discuss them and provide social and political impetus.
