TUMCS Rector Prof. Dr. Volker Sieber showed the Minister President, who was accompanied by State Chancellery Chief Dr. Florian Herrmann, among others, sustainable, innovative materials in the laboratory of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Jakob Burger's Chair of Chemical and Thermal Process Engineering.
This was followed by a short talk with Markus Söder, Prof. Sieber, and Straubing's mayor Markus Pannermayr in the packed lecture hall. The Bavarian Minister President said that the TUM Campus Straubing was “not a branch, but a jewel” of the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
During the panel discussion, Söder promised further support for the university location. “Our goal is to continue to promote and support it and also to turn it into a source of start-ups,” he explained to the TUMCS students. Söder pledged an additional €700,000 to TUMCS, which is earmarked for the campus in the current budget.
Mayor Pannermayr said, “This additional support is needed now.” He added that further expansion and the filling of professorial positions in additional subject areas are necessary. The TUM campus currently has 25 professorships. The mayor also commented on the train connection between Straubing and Munich, saying, “The goal must be to get a direct connection without having to change trains in the future.”
