The award committee, comprising Lord Mayor Markus Pannermayr, District Administrator Josef Laumer and Chairman of the Board Walter Strohmaier, unanimously chose Anna Dachs as the winner. In her Master's thesis at the TUM Campus Straubing, she dealt with the topic of “Engineering Living Materials for Bio-HLEDs” and received a grade of 1.
The aim of the thesis was to work on a new concept that represents an approach to further developing conventional LEDs in order to make them more sustainable. Rare earths are replaced by certain proteins. However, their production is complex and therefore more expensive and they have a short service life. The master's thesis addresses these two problem areas and investigates how this protein can be produced using living E. coli bacteria. The aim is to reduce the production costs of BioLEDs and replace conventional LED technologies based on fossil resources with sustainable approaches.
The official presentation of the award, which is endowed with 5,000 euros, will take place at a ceremony on July 16 in the Max Frank Hall in Leiblfing. Anna Dachs, who was born and grew up in Straubing, graduated from the Anton-Bruckner-Gymnasium and wrote her Bachelor's and Master's thesis at the TUM Campus Straubing for Biotechnology and Sustainability (Chair of Biogenic Functional Materials of Prof. Rubén D. Costa).
By awarding the Straubing Hochschulpreis, the city, district and Sparkasse Niederbayern-Mitte once again underline their appreciation of the promotion of science, art and culture. On the one hand, the award recognizes achievements and lays the foundation for a successful academic career.
