: City Vital - a sustainable Sunsail for urban spaces

At the TUM Campus Straubing, students have developed a project called „City Vital“, tackling the summer heat and sun exposure in urban spaces. The „Sunsail“ benefits quality of life, and combines it with sustainability.

At the Technical University of Munich Campus Straubing, students developed City Vital, a project tackling extreme urban heat caused by climate change. Their solution, called the “Sunsail,” is a greened sunshade covered with eleven types of Sedum plants—heat-resistant, low-maintenance succulents that store water and help cool urban spaces.

The Sunsail acts like a natural air conditioner: it can lower temperatures underneath by up to 3 °C, improve air quality, absorb CO₂, and create greener public spaces for relaxation and social interaction. The project also supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including health, sustainable cities, climate action, and biodiversity.

City Vital was developed by the student organisation Enactus Straubing e.V.. To hear more about the project by an key member, you may follow this link: https://www.cs.tum.de/de/aktuelles/artikel/studierende-entwickeln-loesungen-gegen-urbane-hitze
