Start Speaking the Language of Business!
In business, there are two main languages – accounting and finance. Business is decision-making under uncertainty. Although managers only have limited information, they need to constantly make decisions about the company’s strategic and operative directions. Both the languages of accounting (historical information) and finance (forward-looking information) deliver valuable information to managers in order to support their decision-making under uncertainty.
The rule-based system of accounting should ensure accurate, consistent, and reliable information. As such, accountants prepare accounting numbers that represent the foundation for analyzing the company’s current financial situation. The language of finance helps assessing the company’s value and asks how to maximize the value of the company in the future. Both languages are therefore essential for understanding the complex structure and environment of companies around the globe. Do you already speak the language of business?
“You have to understand accounting and you have to understand the nuances of accounting. It’s the language of business and it’s an imperfect language, but unless you are willing to put in the effort to learn accounting – how to read and interpret financial statements – you really shouldn’t select stocks yourself” (Warren Buffett)
